TIA AND INDUSTRY NEWS

NEW PASSPORT RULES FOLLOWING WHTI LEGISLATIVE VICTORY
The travel and tourism industry achieved a great victory on the industry's top legislative priority when Congress approved extending the deadline for the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) from January 1, 2008 until June 1, 2009. This action is the result of a nearly two-year integrated campaign led by TIA, Travel Business Roundtable and other national and local organizations. Click here for details of the WHTI victory.

In related news, TIA is encouraging all Western Hemisphere travelers, including U.S. residents, intent on taking a trip to or from America to get a passport now in order to simplify the travel process. Click here for new passport rules.

MARKETING OUTLOOK FORUM SAILS TO SUCCESS
The 2006 Marketing Outlook Forum launched with an opening reception aboard the Lady Windridge Yacht. In the two days that followed keynote speakers enlightened and educated more than 500 attendees on a number of topics, including Frank Luntz providing insight into Words that Work: the Language of Travel & Tourism. New to this year's Forum was the highly successful Fast Track session, designed to give delegates a chance to meet in roundtable fashion with eBusiness industry experts.

One of the highlights of every Marketing Outlook Forum is the Awards Gala and this year created even more buzz with the addition of two new awards sponsored and awarded by National Geographic Traveler Magazine. The gala was co-hosted by TIA President & CEO Roger Dow and Dawn Drew, vice president & publisher, National Geographic Traveler. The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation was the big winner taking home a record three Odyssey Awards. For a list of all winners, click here.

The industry also honored Jonathan Linen with induction into the Hall of Leaders, an award that recognizes his significant contributions to the travel industry throughout his career. For details, click here.

NEW REPORT PROVIDES INSIGHT INTO EMERGING MARKETS
China and India together account for over one-third of the world’s population and are quickly emerging as two of the world’s largest and fastest growing economies. Recent changes in the political, economic, and social climates of these Asian giants have created burgeoning middle classes (which some estimate to be in the hundreds of millions) that have a growing desire and increasing ability to travel across Asia and beyond. These and other factors, including forecasts of outbound travel and travel to the U.S. from these countries, are profiled in TIA’s newest research report: Emerging International Tourism Markets, 2006 Edition. This report also provides insight into consumer and technological trends in these countries and suggests ways that U.S. firms, destinations, and marketers can capitalize on travel from these emerging global powers. Click here for further information.

AMERICA SHOWS JAPAN WHAT SHE'S GOT
TIA facilitated a series of America-branded events in Japan in Tokyo from September 19-24 in conjunction with the JATA World Travel Fair. All events were well attended with 26 U.S. suppliers participating in a Media Marketplace where they met one-on-one with travel trade and consumer media. Close to 120 media and travel professionals attended a media reception during which the 5th annual See America Travel Writers Award was given to Rakuda magazine for their article on a senior travelers' motorbike tour on Route 66. The America-branded Pavilion at JATA had an impressive showing with 59 booths in total and several highly entertaining exhibitions for consumers..
