ENTHUSIASTIC RESPONSE TO 2006 ESTO CONFERENCE
The 2006 edition of ESTO, the Educational Seminar for Tourism Organizations, drew a healthy 400 delegates to Minneapolis including representatives from 48 state tourism departments. Feedback from attendees indicates this ESTO had one of the most powerful programs in recent years: "Lisa Ford (keynote) was inspiring and funny," according to one delegate. "Mark Addicks (CMO at General Mills) was amazing," from another response. And Roy Williams, the "Wizard of Ads," was "awesome…incredible…thought provoking…" according to several attendees. ESTO also featured lively discussion groups and two packed public relations sections.

TIA President and CEO Roger Dow thanked several groups who were critical to a successful ESTO. "Explore Minnesota, Meet Minneapolis, Saint Paul RiverCentre CVA, and the Bloomington CVB made incredible contributions," Dow said. "The ESTO Committee, National Council leaders and other TIA members were absolutely indispensable and demonstrated the effectiveness of TIA members," he added. "And we couldn't have ESTO without our very generous sponsors."

GUEVARA ADDRESSES VISA ISSUES IN BRAZIL
Ana Guevara, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Services in the International Trade Administration (ITA) met with TIA's director of international marketing, Luiz DeMoura and industry leaders in Brazil earlier this month. TIA organized several meetings in Sao Paulo for the deputy assistant secretary with Brazilian trade associations, U.S. companies based in Brazil and Brazilian airline TAM. Visa issues were the main topics throughout but Ms. Guevara was also interested in learning about local market trends and how other international destinations are marketing themselves in Brazil compared to the US. Ms. Guevara also traveled to Rio de Janeiro where she met with local trade associations and U.S. carriers, and to Brasilia to meet with Brazil's Minister of Tourism and Embratur, again, mostly about visa issues.

In related news, during ESTO 2006 Ms. Guevara presented an update from the Department of Commerce. She shared information on the current activities of the Travel and Tourism Advisory Board, the interagency Tourism Policy Council and the marketing programs in the U.K. and Japan.
