TIA
AND INDUSTRY NEWS
LEADING THE FIGHT ON WHTI AND INDUSTRY IMAGE
TIA and TBR are leading the fight for a modest extension of the
Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) and to enhance our industry's
position before policymakers. This week the USA Today ran
an op-ed authored by TIA that details the many reasons for a WHTI
extension, including the lessons learned from last week's airport
security changes. Click
here for op-ed. Also this week, a profile of Keith Reinhard
and Business for Diplomatic Action was featured in an article in
the The Washington Post. Keith, a close friend of the Travel
Business Roundtable, TIA and this industry, repeatedly emphasizes
travel and tourism's crucial role in the public diplomacy process.

BRITISH ARRESTS
OF SUSPECTED TERRORISTS
The arrests last week by British authorities
of suspected airline terrorists led to increased security measures
around the world. And while the Department of Homeland Security lowered
the aviation
threat level from red to orange earlier this week, a number of
new
air travel requirements remain in place. TIA commends Homeland
Security Secretary Chertoff, Attorney General Gonzales and TSA officials
in their balanced approach to the situation, keeping in mind the principles
of the Rice-Chertoff initiative "Secure Borders and Open Doors." For
statement from Roger Dow, click

NEW REPORT SHOWS LEISURE TRAVEL MORE POPULAR THAN EVER
Americans took over 1.4 billion leisure trips in 2004, an increase
of almost 9 percent since 2000. Most leisure travelers journey by
car, and most leisure trips are taken either to visit friends or
family or for personal reasons. More information on leisure travelers
and trips, including spending, transportation, lodging, and activities,
can be found in TIA's new U.S. Domestic Leisure Travel Report, the
first to use the TIA TravelScope®/DIRECTIONS®
by DKS&A survey. Click here

NEW INDUSTRY INSIGHT WITH "VOICE OF THE INDUSTRY"
TIA and Vision Critical, a leader in research panel development,
are assembling a new research panel to provide TIA and its members
consistent, focused information about the state of the U.S. travel
industry. The panel, called the "Voice of the Industry," will consist
of 2,500 industry professionals who will provide TIA with the "pulse"
of the industry -- e.g. how their business is doing, how they are
reacting to changes, such as increases in gas prices, and how they
are preparing for and responding to disaster. TIA will produce regular
reports on the state of the industry and will make the panel available
to its members who want to ask proprietary questions. For more information

POVERTY NEVER TAKES A VACATION: THE BOX PROJECT WANTS YOUR
HELP
Currently, 37 million Americans live in poverty and nearly half
are children. Since 1962, The Box Project has helped
to alleviate the effects of poverty right here at home. They match
sponsors with families living in poverty in rural regions of the
US. Each month, sponsors send boxes of food, clothing and needed
supplies to their match family. They get to know each other and
share family trials and triumphs through letters and phone calls.
The Box Project, whose current theme is "Poverty Never Takes
A Vacation" is asking members of the travel industry for help.
To find out how your organization can make a difference, visit www.boxproject.org
or call toll-free 866-677-8094. |
