TIA AND INDUSTRY NEWS

INDUSTRY LEADERS TESTIFY TO CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES TRAVEL CAN ADDRESS
Travel industry leaders Jay Rasulo, Chairman, Travel Industry Association and Chairman U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board; Jonathan Tisch, Chairman, The Travel Business Roundtable; and Todd Davidson, Chair, National Council of State Tourism Directors, told a Senate Subcommittee about challenges facing the industry and also about the unique role travel can play to help improve the U.S. image worldwide. Their message was unified in demonstrating the need to reach out to the growing global travel market. Jay Rasulo told the Senate "we can't afford not to invest in this form of grassroots public diplomacy." For full testimonies, click here To listen to a podcast of the testimonies, click here.

TIA 2006 FORECAST CALLS FOR SLOWING REVENUE GROWTH
TIA's updated 2006 forecast predicts another record year for consumer spending on travel. But the rate of revenue growth for the industry is slowing. Revenues are expected to grow at 4.5 percent this year, according to the updated forecast, versus 7.8 and 7.9 percent in 2004 and 2005. Higher gasoline prices at the beginning of the summer travel season are one of the main contributing factors. Click here for details.

NEW MARKET FORECAST AND REVIEW REPORTS AVAILABLE
Despite declines in U.S. arrivals from several key markets in the first quarter of 2006, by the end of the year the United States is likely to see overall growth in tourist arrivals from each of the five countries profiled in TIA's Market Forecast and Reviews. The first-quarter declines were primarily due to the later-than-usual Easter holiday (which occurred in April rather than March of this year), leading TIA to predict that arrivals will see a strong rebound in April and the second quarter overall. This short-term rebound will be accompanied by a strong global economy and favorable exchange rates for international visitors, all of which will help U.S. arrivals improve through the rest of 2006. SEEAMERICA.JP GETS A NEW FACE FOR A NEW START
The new and improved SeeAmerica.jp website was just launched on June 15 to support the current Department of Commerce "You've seen the films, now visit the set" campaign, with enhancements that will make the site a more robust marketing vehicle as TIA reaches out to the Japanese market. SeeAmerica.jp bears strong resemblance to the SeeAmerica.org website in design and functionality but the majority of content has been translated to Japanese, including all of the state pages. Other features in Japanese include: a newsletter opt-in that will allow for ongoing marketing to Japanese consumers, links to Japanese versions of destination websites, a travel news section that is updated daily, and a Travel Packages section with travel offers in Japanese. Members can reach this market by posting travel packages, special events, and links to their Japanese websites on SeeAmerica.jp, and by participating in the current coop advertising program that will reach hundreds of thousands of Japanese travelers over the next 6 months. Contact Kayoko Inoue for further details at Kinoue@tia.org. Contact Lisa Lanna for coop opportunities at llanna@tia.org.
