TIA AND INDUSTRY NEWS

MAJOR NATIONAL NEWSPAPERS REPORT ON IMAGE CAMPAIGN
A recent article on the front page of the USA TODAY Money section examined the travel industry's role in helping bring international visitors back to the U.S. while improving America's image abroad. Referring to the January 17 press conference with Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, USA TODAY journalist Barbara De Lollis linked the travel industry's image campaign with recent government action. "For the first time, the travel industry has influenced the Bush administration policies on border protection, and possibly established for the future that the economic and diplomatic benefits of foreign tourism deserve consideration in the war against terrorism." To view the entire article, click here.

In related news, The Wall Street Journal published an article on how the Bush Administration and Karen Hughes, undersecretary of state for public diplomacy, have enlisted the help of U.S. companies in a diplomacy campaign to boost the U.S. image overseas. The article cites that among the initiatives is a program to improve the arrival experience for international visitors at U.S. airports. To view the article, click here.

LA TIMES SHOWCASES TRAVEL INDUSTRY IMPACT
A recent article in the LA Times pulled statistics from TIA's The Power of Travel Report 2006 to emphasize the impact the travel industry has on U.S. national and local economies. The article also explores the fun side of travel statistics, such as the number of times per day the song "It's a Small World" is played at Disneyland (1,027.5) and that 136,540 Mai Tai drinks were served last year at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. GLOBAL TRAVEL KEEPS GROWING
Global travel is expected to increase in 2006, and the United States will likely see increases in tourism from each of the five countries-Brazil, Canada, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom-in TIA's Market Forecast and Reviews. A strong global economy is the most important factor in the predicted increases in both global travel and in travel to the U.S., although strong foreign currencies, improved marketing from the U.S. government, and improved political ties between the U.S. and other countries are also expected to improve travel to the United States in the year ahead. Travel to the U.S. from Germany, for example, has benefited from a dramatic German economic recovery, improved political ties to the U.S. under a new chancellor, and a strong euro relative to the U.S. dollar. Arrivals from Germany grew 8 percent in 2005 and will likely grow another 9 percent in 2006.
