National Touirsm Week, May 12-20, 2007, is a great time to promote the importance of tourism to industry employees and elected officials. Below is a listing of fascinating and fun facts that demonstrate the far reaching effects of travel and tourism. You can help get the tourism message out by using these facts or creating your own Did You Know? Tourism Fact Sheet. Simply customize and send this document to your industry colleagues, members, and local lawmakers.   • Did You Know that Travel and Tourism is a $1.3 trillion industry in the United States? If one dollar bill equaled a second of time, then $1.3 trillion would equal over 41,000 years.
  • Did You Know that Travel and Tourism generates $100 billion in tax revenue for local, state, and federal governments? If you place 100 billion dollar bills end-to-end, they would circle the world 397 times.
  • Did You Know that each U.S. household would pay $923 more in taxes without the tax revenue generated by the Travel and Tourism Industry? $923 will buy two months worth of groceries for a family of four, will fill the average car with gas 35 times or will pay for a family beach vacation.
  • Did You Know that the Travel and Tourism industry is one of the country's largest employers with 7.3 million direct travel-generated jobs? You could fill the Orange Bowl statdium a hundred times over with people directly employed in the industry.
  • Did You Know that there is $163 billion direct travel-generated payroll and that one out of every eight U.S. non-farm jobs is directly and indirectly created by travel and tourism.
  • Did You Know that international travelers spent $93 billion in the U.S. in 2004? That's enough money to buy 470 new Boeing 747 jumbo jets.
  • Did You Know that shopping is the most popular domestic trip activity, and is included in 30 percent of all domestic trips. In total, that's 342 million trips with shopping sprees.
  • Did You Know that approximately 2.6 million hotels rooms are sold everyday in the United States. That is enough rooms to lodge every person living in San Francisco, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Miami, and Denver combined.
  • Did You Know that 80 percent of adult travelers (over 118 million people) have included an historic or cultural activity while traveling. That is roughly the population of United Kingdom and Italy combined.
  • Did You Know that spending by resident and international travelers in the U.S. averaged $1.6 billion a day, $68 million an hour, $1.1 million a minute, and $19,000 a second.
  • Did You Know that the travel and tourism industry is one of America's largest service exports with $93 billion spent by international visitors in the U.S. and $89 billion spent outside the U.S. by domestic travelers creates $4 billion in balance of trade surplus for the U.S.
  • Did You Know that the just a 1 percent increase in U.S. worldwide market share would equal a 7.6 million increase in visitors, a $12.3 billion increase in expenditures, 151,000 new jobs, a $3.3 billion increase in payroll, and $2.1 billion more in federal, state and local tax revenue?
