In 1985, the National Council of State Tourism Directors (NCSTD) created a national awards program to:
- Recognize members for excellence and creative accomplishment in state/territory tourism marketing and promotion
- Inspire the continued development of truly imaginative and exciting destination marketing and promotion programs
- Showcase outstanding work
Currently there are 12 general categories of Mercury Awards, some with subcategories, for a total of 16 opportunities. Mercury Awards entries are solicited in the spring (between March and May). Winners are announced at a special awards ceremony held during TIA's annual Educational Seminar for Tourism Organizations (ESTO).
