TIA Foundation Scholarships

The Foundation was created in the early-1990s to help meet the Travel Industry's growing need for trained professionals and academics who can guide the entire into the future. In order to better accomplish this goal, TIA awarded its first $3,000 scholarship in 1993. Given in the honor of the late William D. Toohey, former TIA president, this TIA scholarship has evolved into an annual award. Today, there are 6 TIA Foundation Scholarships for both graduate and undergraduate students worth $19,000.  Since 1993, the TIA Foundation has awarded $459,000 in scholarship awards.

TIA Foundation scholarships are divided into two groups:

  • One $4,000 graduate student scholarship:
    • The National Council of Destination Organizations (NCDO) Graduate Scholarship
  • Five $3,000 undergraduate awards including:
    • The National Council of Destination Organizations (NCDO) Undergraduate Scholarship
    • Shop America Alliance Scholarship
    • The Ronald H. Brown Memorial Scholarship - named for the late U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary to encourage minority students to pursue travel and tourism industry-related degrees.
    • Tourism Works for America Legacy Scholarship
    • William S. Norman Scholarship

To apply for a TIA student scholarship, you must be nominated by a department head in the field of travel and tourism. Winners are then selected by the Foundation scholarship selection committee based on several factors, including submitted essays on the topic, "What Segment of the Tourism Industry Interests You and Why."

The TIA Foundation depends upon the generous support of TIA members like you to fund these annual scholarships. TIA Member participation is an excellent way to demonstrate how the travel and tourism industry invests in local communities across the nation. Named scholarships are available to members for as little as $6,000.
